It's a song called 'Burn the Ships' by the band 'For KING & COUNTRY', and I have had it on REPEAT ever since it released.
The chorus goes like this:
Step into a new day
We can rise up from the dust and walk away
We can dance upon the heartache
So light a match
Leave the past
Burn the ships
And don't you look back.
I released my blog post entitled "handling disappointments" the day that this song came out.
I had written that post because the Tuesday before that, I sat down in the driver's seat after choir rehearsal, and started praying about a certain situation in my life.
All I really said was, "what do I do?" But I had been struggling with this thing for a few weeks, and it was heavy on my mind in that moment.
As soon as I finished praying, I checked my email and found out that I didn't end up getting a job I had made it into the final two candidates for, due to my lack of experience.
Needless to say, I cried for a good chunk of that drive home.
It wasn't even the fact that I hadn't gotten the job, though that did sting a bit.
It was just the fact that it had happened at a weak moment for me. I had just gone through a different door closing, and I had thought this other situation was something God was sending me for over a year and a half. About 3 weeks prior to that moment, I had started to see that maybe He had something else in mind, so that prayer in the car was largely my way of acknowledging that that door was closing too; and the job door closing was just the last thing I could take.
I wrote down a prayer on the 27th, two days after this had happened and a day before the song was released, where I basically ended with saying, "I'm done. I'm going to concern myself with nothing but You from now on. You know what I want, You know what I need, I trust You. But if You can hear me... please show me."
The next day, He showed me by singing to me.
My favorite lyrics in the whole song would have to be the pre-chorus...
We've got to
Burn the ships
Cut the ties
Send a flare into the night
Say a prayer
Turn the tide
Dry your tears
And wave goodbye.
The reason I love it so much is because of the part that says, "dry your tears."
It proves to me that it's not easy to move on. Whatever situation that may be for you, it's not easy to step into a new day. And just hearing that brought me so much comfort, because I certainly did not think moving on from, especially the one situation, was easy.
But I still knew I had to do it. I still knew I had to be strong, cling to Jesus, dry my tears, and wave goodbye.
So I burnt my ships. I did what I needed to do to prove to myself that I was moving on, and I made the choice to not look back. So far, that's where the story takes us. However, as I've concerned myself with nothing but seeking Christ these past couple weeks, I've begun to find joy and hope again. I may not know what's next, but I believe very strongly that pain is evidence of incoming strength. I believe this is bringing a breakthrough, and very soon, I will be writing a praise report of a beautiful testimony for you all.
But until then, here's to burning those ships. Whatever they may be. Here's to moving on, though you may be doing so with tear-stained cheeks, and never looking back.
And finally, here's to the new day. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, highs are in the 70's, and everything is going to be okay.
It's time.
